The present St. Mary's Church was consecrated on the 12th October 1871. It replaced the former church which was largely demolished but for the tower which has an iconic presence nearby. The church and its immediate surroundings have a wealth of heritage going back many centuries, the oldest is the motte and bailey to the north of the present church.
St Mary's became part of the Mirfield Team Parish in 2007 joining with St John's in Upper Hopton and St Paul's in Eastthorpe. Adjacent to the church site is the Team Parish Office which is part of the community centre site. Both the church and the community centre host a wide variety of events which all play a part in the mission and outreach of the team parish. Everyone is given a warm welcome at St Mary's not least by the present clergy, headed by the Rev'd. Hugh Baker who is the Vicar of Mirfield Team Parish.
There are a number of good guide books about the history of the church, the stained glass windows and other local history which hold a host of detailed information about the history and development of St Mary's. These are all on sale in St. Mary's Church. The Friends of St. Mary's have also filmed a DVD giving an account of 1,000 years of history of the site. This DVD can also be purchased for £10 at the church, proceeds from the sale go towards the rebuilding of the collapsed wall by the Castle Mound on Dunbottle Lane.
